However, NATURAL CONSEQUENCES are NOT appropriate if they have the potential to hurt a child in adult life—reckless driving, brushing teeth, grades, etc. NATURAL CONSEQUENCES are also not appropriate if a child is a danger to himself/herself or another child.

The BEST WAYS to help a CHILD become a RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKER is through giving CONSEQUENCES and TAKING AWAY PRIVILEGES. Keep most consequences or loss of privileges brief, otherwise, a child’s spirit can be broken. Always ask, “Will this discipline help a child make a better decision next time?”
